Transcool Portable 12 volt evaporative air cooler

  

What is it?

Transcool is a 12 volt evaporative air cooler, pour 2 litres  of water in through the lid, plug the 3 metre power lead into cigarette socket, select fan speed and away you go!

  

How cold will the Transcool 12 volt air cooler make my cabin or room?

The Transcool is a small evaporative cooling unit that is totally portable.

Transcool is simply able to blow a cool breeze over the user -whilst in front of the unit-

The Transcool will not cool down a ‘room’ to a controlled temperature, this is where a refrigerated unit is required.

 

Will the Transcool Portable air cooler cool my vehicle like a built in air conditioner?

 

Quite simply-No!

A refrigerated air conditioning system is hard to beat, but useless without 240v electricity!

A refrigerated air conditioning system has many complex and expensive components. These systems require many permanently fitted parts such as a compressor, condenser and evaporator, and refrigerant gas to cool air.  A vehicle or household air conditioner requires immense power to ‘drive’.

If you absolutely need a vehicle with air conditioner then repair or replace yours!

If these options are not possible, then Transcool will help provide relief from the heat.

Evaporative cooling performance can differ depending on various conditions such as ambient temperature and humidity, but test results show that Transcool can deliver air temperatures up to 45% cooler (at the vent) than the ambient air temperature just using water at room temperature!

Temperatures at up to 50% cooler than ambient (at the vent) can be achieved using ice water.

Test results taken on a 40o (C) day with humidty at 12% showed a vent temperature at 21o (C) using just water at room temperature !

For an example of effectiveness, think of a standard fan on a hot day.

The air streamed at you feels cooler,  even though the air is technically at ambient room temperature.

It feels 'cooler' because it is moving!

Transcool combines this factor ,along with cooled air from it's super effective evaporative cooling pad to provide you with crisp cool air that simply feels like- HEAVEN!

 

 

 

The following are brief examples of the differences between air conditioner and evaporative cooling:

For maximum efficiency, you must allow proper ventilation when using an evaporative cooler and allow fresh air to the unit, where as you can re-circulate air cooled by an air conditioner in an enclosed environment. 

A refrigerated air conditioner is so effective at cooling because they can transfer hot air from the area, as well as deliver cool air to the same area.

An evaporative cooler simply blows cooled air over the user when the unit is directed at them.

Refrigerated AC requires a lot more components, as well as a refrigerent gas.

Refrigerated AC generally requires a greater power supply such as 240 volt eletricity or engine driven compressors.

You must dispose of excess water accumulated by an air conditioner. There is no excess water accumulated by an evaporative cooler.

Condensation with use of Transcool is not an issue

Refrigerated air conditioning is much more expensive! 

 

 

How long will the water last?  

Water usage with evaporative cooling varies on fan speed and ambient air temperature.

Under most conditions Transcool's internal 2 litre supply will last all night on 'low' speed - adequate for cool air while you're sleeping!

The great news is that no damage will result if you run the Transcool out of water during use!

Transcool can be used without water in areas of high humidity, you can even add ice!

The EC2 is also supplied with an external 5 litre tank for extended periods of use. The clear external tank features an ON/OFF tap and connects to the unit via hose.

The Transcool EC2 uses an internal float system that automatically maintains the correct water level when using the external tank.

Transcool features a transparent water window to display level.

 

 

How long will my battery last?

Transcool only uses a maximum of 1.7 amps  (on high speed)

This equals hours of cooling comfort - even without your vehicle running

You will generally find 'low' fan speed (0.7amps) more than adequate for sleeping.

 

For extended periods of cooling, use of a deep cycle battery or battery power pack is recommended.

Use Transcool with a small Gel deep cycle battery pack from stores such as Jaycar for camping in your swag or tent.

Results below were taken using Waeco's small but compact 'Coolpower 36' battery pack (36 Amp hours)

 

 

Results below display greater fan operation times using the Waeco Coolpower, than using a conventional car 'starting' battery.

LOW SPEED -        90 Hours*

MEDIUM SPEED -  38 Hours*

HIGH SPEED -        32 hours*

 

*Test results using Transcool with a Waeco Coolpower 36 deep cycle battery pack until battery power was drained to 11.2 volts

A deep cycle battery can supply power supply for a much longer period of time, and can be drained to a lower voltage than a standard car ‘starting’ battery, which has a primary purpose to deliver short, high energy bursts of current for vehicle starting.

Most caravans, 4WD’s and boats are fitted with secondary ‘deep cycle’ battery systems, sometimes with larger 100 Amp hour batteries  to provide extended power supply for appliances such as fridges and cooler’s etc.

 

 

The following results were achieved using a standard 12volt 60ah Lead acid car battery*, with Transcool running until battery voltage was reduced to 12 volts - this ensures reliable vehicle startup!

LOW SPEED -       42 hours

MEDIUM SPEED - 17 hours

HIGH SPEED -      10 hours

*Battery power draw examples were recorded using a fully charged Delkor 22F-520 (12volt 60 Amp hour) car battery, running the Transcool EC2 constantly until battery voltage fell to 12 volts. (Battery was not connected to car at time) Individual results may vary on depending on battery specification.

 

 

How much noise?

The sound level produced by the Transcool Evaporative air cooler is even quieter than that of a car air conditioner/heater fan. This ranges from 46db (low fan speed) to 59db (maximum fan speed) at 1 metre. The tone Transcool produces is a relaxing, steady weary  drone’- perfect to help dilute any annoying outside noises.

Why is the Australian Transcool EC2  better?

 

Transcool units prior to the current  EC2 model had been manufactured in the USA.   The new Australian Transcool EC2 has been sigificantly redesigned to overcome reliability problems we experienced with many of the American made units. 

The problems with some of the American units include water leakage around the joins, due to the fact that the unit is constructed using the cheaper technique of glueing flat pieces of plastic together to form a 'watertight' container.

By comparison, the Transcool EC2 is manufactured using durable ABS plastic, injection moulded to form a strong and seamless watertight container.   The injection moulding process is more expensive, but essential to provide you with the strongest, most robust unit available.  

The American unit is also prone to corrosion with its openly exposed fan speed switch- a problem the Transcool EC2 has overcome by using a moisture proof electrical enclosure.   Water is more easily added to the Transcool EC2 unit through a screw top lid.   This is a major advantage over the 'flap' style side fill lid in the American unit, which is not only awkward to fill, but also tends to cause an annoying rattle over bumpy terrain when not in use.

Damage due to overfilling the Transcool EC2 is avoided with the unit incorporating excess water 'drain off' in its design.  

Unlike the American unit, the Transcool EC2 also features water baffling that enables the unit to be used in moving vehicles.

Transcool's quality components see an increase in minimum fan life expectancy- 80,000 hours ( Transcool fan manfacturer's data) compared to only 20,000 hours with the US model (the American manufactures claim).

The heart of the Transcool EC2 features a quieter, more powerful moisture proof fan assembly that is capable of moving up to  6.89m3 (240 CFM) of air at a velocity of 10.83 m/s (2133+ ft per minute) ! 

The new Transcool True Blue evaporative cooling pads are now more durable (500+ hours*) and allow greater air velocity while still delivering air at the vent up to 50% cooler than ambient.
